Tipping Hair Stylist

Ok so here's the background story -
I have an awesome hair stylist that works at an exclusive salon. So since I'm not a member she cuts my hair on the side at her house. I have used her since I was 15 (I'm 22 now). She wasn't always at this salon and when I first started using her it was at another salon that I could use (not-exclusive). This arrangement (she cuts my hair on the side) is a new situation.
I had my hair cut about a month ago - basically just a trim. She charged me $25 and I gave her a $10 tip. I wasn't sure about tipping her and how much. So I just did that.

Here is my question - I am going to her house tomorrow night (Friday) to get my hair cut again - this time a complete new style (probably about 5 inches cut off). She will probably style my hair afterward as she generally does this.
Should I tip since she is getting all the money and doesn't have to share with owner, etc?
If I should tip ... what percentage?

Thank you!! Smiling

I personally think that the $10 was well over what you needed to tip for the trim (40%). However, since you tipped her last time, I think you are stuck tipping again, regardless. I would just tip the standard 20% and if you feel the need to tip more, go ahead. However, she's charging you the price for the service (especially if she's doing this on her own), the tip is just above and beyond. If she's not paying fees to anyone, I don't think you really need to go for a 40% tip each time. I'd just do 20%. That's the widely accepted amount.

I agree, but I don't think she will be hurt if you don't give her a larger amount. And on another note, I didn't think there were Salons that were "exclusive". That sounds heinous.

I go to this place off of Walker & I-240...forget the name of it, but anyways, this girl named Jackie just *knew* how to handle my wacky hair. And she didn't call my blonde spot a "streak of gray hair" like all the others thought. I'm growing my hair out so I can give it to Locks of Love. Then I'm going to get a kickass cut & color. Laughing out loud

Thanks for your help ladies!
The reason I did $10 was because I hadn't really thought about tipping or not before hand and when she told me the amount I realized I didn't know the proper etiquette and just added $10. I didn't realize that it was such a high percentage until later on when I thought about it.
I will continue tipping, but like you all said at a lower percentage.

kythera, I didn't remember that you live here in OK! I live in Norman.
Oh and I think the reason the salon is 'exclusive' is b/c it is part of a country club or something.

Thanks again for all your help ladies!!

i tip my hairdresser $10 for a relaxer (chemical process), a cut and styling. He charges $60 for everything. i guess thats about 15%? i'm bad with math... but that $10 on a $25 cut was waay too much. $5 would have been good. I had a friend who would do my hair when i was younger for free, but i would buy her a meal when she came over and paid her cab ride home (a given since she came out of her way to do my hair) as a compensation. i dont know if you and your stylist are close but my point was you could also maybe treat her to a meal as a "tip" if your uncomfortable giving money.
